Helpful Tips

  • Mosquito: Advisable to buy Mosquito Repellent (lotion) from Sri Lankan leading Supermarkets or Pharmacies which is very effective for Sri Lankan Mosquitos and easy to use!
  • When exchanging foreign currency to Sri Lankan Rupees (LKR), walk to a Private Money Exchange, where you will get better exchange rates.
  • Do not try to drive in Sri Lanka unless you already have driven in Sri Lanka before, since traffic is enormous, plus most of the drivers do not follow the rules. The best is to hire a car with a driver, if needed for a long journey out of Colombo. In the other hand Taxies for short distances.

  • "Lion" Beer - remember to enjoy a Sri Lankan "Lion" Beer during your stay which is a fantastic Beer! If you buy the cans just buy like any other canned drink, but if you buy the bottles remember that you need to pay a deposit for each bottle. As long as you need to buy Beer again and again just return the empty bottles and pay for the Beer only. When you do not need any more return empty bottles and take the deposit back.
  • Where to buy Alcohol? - widely available in all major Super Markets i.e. Arpico Super Centers, Food City, Super Kheels, etc., There are also Stand-alone Alcohol Outlets available in every city center.
Note:
Stand-alone Outlets and the Alcohol Counters inside the Super Markets close at 21:00 hrs. daily. Also, all these Alcohol Outlets remain closed on Buddhist Religious day called "Poya Day" fallen once a month .
